A Weekly Sharing of Reflection
on the Word of God
4th. Sunday after Epiphany: 22nd January 2006
Dear Friends
Greetings in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Worry and Security - 2
Jesus says ,
Ask
and it shall be given you; seek and you will find; knock
and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he
who seeks finds; to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give
him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish will give him a snake? If you,
then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who
ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them
do to you, for this sums up the Law and the prophets. ( Matt. 6;7-12
)
Read the word of Jesus a few times to be clear of
what he is saying to us as he told this to his hearers in his day. Last
week we reflected on Jesus teaching on worry and security. We continue
on this and try to see what our main worries are and where we can find
our security. Three things we worry most are heath, wealth and success
in our endeavors.
This week we shall look at health. All of us know
that illness will affect us, some are serious and minor. We worry when
we are ill and we seek treatment. Thanks be to God we are not alone when
we are ill. God has given us doctors and has given them knowledge to
give us the right treatment. We need to remind ourselves that God is
in control over everything and nothing happens without His knowledge
and He is with the doctors whether they are aware or not. We need to
follow the doctor’s directions and advice and at the same time seek
God’s help in prayer to heal us.
Here we also need to be aware that healing is not
just taking the right medicine, but also involves our attitudes
towards others and God our creator and whether we are in a
right relationship with them. Faith and trust in God are vital for
recovery. We see this in the many people who came to Jesus for
healing. We see the woman who touched Jesus clothing and became well. We
see the faith of the four friends who removed the roof tiles to let down
their bedridden friend before Jesus. They saw their friend healed
because of their faith. We see Jairus seeking Jesus to heal his daughter
and remaining in faith even when informed that his daughter has died.
Yes friends faith in God enables us, according to His will to recover
from our illness or to return home to be with Him for ever. Our
security in health or death is none other than God Himself.
The following
questions may help in your reflection.
1. How do I see health and sickness in my life?
2. Can I see God at work in his creation and in
my life when I am ill?
3. What is the difference between me as a
Christian and others?
This is sent out by email once a week. If you have
just come across this for the first time, and would like to receive it,
please send email.
With regards,
Fred.
